Today I was on conservation and game drives. I did the 07:30 game drive with Antonet. We struggled a bit with the Cruiser, but at the end everything went perfect. The game drive consisted of 2 guests and they were quite friendly. We saw quite a lot of animals like: giraffe, blue wildebeest, blesbok, impala, and 21 eland, I have never seen so much eland before, there was also baby eland so adorable.The game drive went quite well and had a lot to talk about. The afternoon at 17:00 we had a game drive with an attitude this is when people get a game drive with snacks. We had an oversees group ''Chinese", they were very interested in what we are telling them and what they saw,I also learned more about them I didn't know that they like eating donkey, this is one of the most expensive meat that they sell in China.We saw the following: eland, blue wildebeest, 6 black backed jackals, serval, red hartebeest, blesbok, impala, warthog etc. I enjoyed this game drive a lot and loved to learn the people new things that they never knew before. We had a woman on the game drive that translated what we told them and then told her people, after the 1 hour game drive we went to the Marula tree at the one drinking area, the guests had snacks and some fruit juice. After wards we headed back to the reception. The people said that they had an unbelievable experience.

Today we had a chance to spend some time with the ellies,was really the greatest time I've had with them. What a opportunity, this was the first time I got so close to an elephant. We arrived at Zebula where the people showed us the interaction (What the elephants can do), it was pretty good how they listened to their teachers they had to sit down like a dog, jump in the air, talk we had to feel their body along the side. We had to feed them small pieces of oranges and boskos every time we had to ask them to do something and then feed them after doing what we asked. I wish we had a unbelievable opportunity to go on a safari with them and swim in the dam. We got very interesting facts about them like when we heard from the owner's son how they can smell a landmine far away and the elephants smell is much better than these of a dog...they founded drugs and the Police's dogs couldn't! The day before we had to get facts, feeding habits, habitat etc. about the elephants so that we know more about them and could tell them about our information we got. This day I learned more about their habitat and how much water they can drink in a day, when do they sleep, how much do they get fed everyday and how good their memory is. This was one big opportunity and I'm glad that I had the chance to sit on the elephants back, it's worse than climbing on a camel it's much higher, you have to do it to believe it.

Will give anything to spend some time with them again.

Tour debrief

Monday 11 October DAY 1

The morning we packed everything on the van, and got everything ready in the bus. We left at about 09:00 at Sondela Nature Reserve. We climb on the Bakwena highway and there we were! We set up some ground rules:

1-No smoking in the bus.

2-No talking when someone is talking.

3-Cellphones only allowed when it is important.

4-When stopping at destination a time period is allowed eg. 10 minutes.

While we were driving Cobus told us about the “Kranskop” (place of the spirits). Our first stop was Makopane where we bought snacks for the road; we had a time limit of 10 minutes. Our next stop was in a small little town where there was a long drop and we were very thirsty. After that we had a stop at Burgersfort where we bought groceries and lunch. There after we had a drive past the Echo Caves and stopped at the Forever Resorts at the Blyde River Canyon. Everybody had a long drive so we stopped at our campsite and loosen the van and took a drive to the lookout view. After that everybody got a chance to get their tents ready and we made a fire and had a little “kuiertjie”. Our group were the cleaning team for the night so after we ate we had to clean the pans and cutlery...

Tuesday 12 October DAY 2

We left at 05:30 at the Blyde River Canyon to Orpens gate, on the way we saw Taita Falcon and went through the J. G Strydom Tunnel. At Orpen Gate we stopped to stretch our legs and drove on through to Satara where we did a 3 and a half hour game drive where we saw a spotted hyena, waterbuck, buffalo, crocodile, lion, elephant, kudu, impala, ground hornbill, hooded vulture, yellow-billed kite, marabou stork, hippo, steenbok. We had lunch at Satara where we were the cooking team; we had a mix of egg, boerewors and baked beans with bread. We left Satara to Olifants and then to Letaba, we stayed along the electric fence it was very windy and everybody had to put up their tents. The cooking team had to stay when the rest of the groups went to see the 19:00 movie at the Elephants Museum. The one thing that was very nice to see was the spotted hyenas lying along the fence; there was a guy that threw a piece of steak over the fence while there is a sign on the fence not to feed them.

Wednesday 13 October DAY 3

Early in the morning they had a game drive, where they saw the leopard. They came back and we had breakfast. We put down the tents and went to the Elephants Museum. This was a very interesting place to visit because we learned much more about the elephants and the size of their tusks. We left the museum and went to Masourini where we saw the history of the place and everything about it like the different stone ages. After that we went to Modjajikloof and visited Cobus dad, he has a hobby of plants so there is over 150 different types of plants and trees. We then went to Tzaneen to go look at the biggest tree in South Africa the Baobab, this tree is 6000 years old. We drove on to the hot water resource (Phukela) where we camped; we were on the packing team so we had to get all of the stuff off the van and we started putting up the tents. We had assessments around the fire and got a chance to go swim in the hot water swimming pool, where we had a lot of fun with Dewaldt. The cooking team cooked for us and the food was very good we had mince. Then after we went to sleep.

Thursday 14 October DAY 4

Today was a day that we had a chance to sleep a bit late, we had a cup of coffee with rusks and everybody had breakfast from the night’s leftovers. Everybody went to take a bath in the swimming pool and we started putting down the tents, we got everything to the van and started packing it. We left at about 10:00 / 11:00 to Modjajiskloof to do some shopping and were on the road again to Georges Valley where I was assessed and we had a look at the canopy tour. We where then on our way to Haenurtsburg where we stopped at the Irish Crown and had a drink and left to the sanitary were we had lunch. We left the sanitary to Nylsvlei where we slept in a house. We had boerewors rolls and sat around the fire and chatted a bit on how the tour was and what we enjoyed most. We then planned what we are going to do the next day and at what time we must wake up.

Friday 15 October DAY 5

Everybody was up early we had a cup of coffee with rusks and the groups were divided to stay to pack and the rest went on a game drive. When they came back the van was packed and we where off to a place that we didn’t know about the aunt that was with us on the tour aunt Collie she had this surprise for us. We drove into the golf estate and we saw that we are going to go on the cable cars. There was a maximum of 8 people allowed on the cable car and we where the second group to have an opportunity to have a lookout view over the mountain. We where then on our way back to Sondela where I had to go do welcoming.

This tour was really nice and I enjoyed it a lot! Will do anything to do something like this again...

Releasing a serval

The serval (pronounced serval, Leptailurus serval, is a medium-size Afican wild cat). Modern molecular DNA analysis indicates that servals maintain their own unique lineage descending from the same Felid ancestor as the lion, and though the serval shares common traits with the cheetah, it is the cheetah which is thought to have descended from ancient servals.Similar DNA studies have shown the African Golden Cat and the caracal are closely related to the serval, and may have branched by cross-breeding.

Today we went to the Waterberg Koppies with the Cruiser where we had to find different tipes of rocks. We learned what the people used to use in the early, middle and late stone age. We took pictures of the different tipes of rocks like sandsteen, flint, iron (slag) and had to write the site down where we got from the GPS...we then went up to the koppies where Cobus told us a bit of the different stone ages...

Today we had welcoming at main gate...there came 177 guests in for the long weekend, we where running around, car's waiting till on the road...It got a bit quiet after a while , but most of the people came in early...enjoying talking to the people!

Today I worked at the Wildlife Centre, the morning we started preparing the food for the animals...after preparing we had to feed them! When feeding the animals like the bokkies, you have to check if they dont suck air, this is a very bad thing for them! We then had to take the lion cubbies to their boma...Charmaine asked us to start cleaning their sleeping area in the clinic, we had to get all of the hay out, broomed the floor, had to spray out and disinfect it...the lion's cheetah, and ostrich have ringworms...After disinfecting and spraying out in the clinic we had to disinfect backsters sleeping area as well!!Waiting for the area to dry and then had to prepare bokkie mix...each 2 litre bottle get 100g of dencavite! I played with the cubbies Max and Lex...helped Charmaine feed them and we had to stimulate them after they got their bottle.

GAME CAPTURE

Today I did my theory with Cobus, learned the different ways of harvesting animals...dead or alive! Dead: hunt-Local eg.(meat or biltong) foreighn(trophy)when using this option it means it is only a small scale of animals. The next way is by culling this means with a spotlight in night time and this is usually used for a large scale of animals. Alive: Chemical Capture-This option will be used for large animals like rhino and elephant and dangerous animals like leopard and lion.

What will be used when using this option: *tranqualizer *antidote.

Different ways of capture: *Boma-rhino; *Nets-blesbuck; *Cages-caracal

When harvesting animals you have to do a game count and velt assessment (carrying capacity) LSU (Large Stock Units). You have to make sure you have the right equipment, if it is serviceable and how or what to repair it with.

After lunch I had to go to the area where the Game Capture took place, this is the form it is (V).

The animals get chased with the Helicopter into the (V) boma, there was 4 stops where we where divided in groups where we had to close the nets. When capturing animals you have to be careful, this is a very dangerous thing to do, always look out for animals and hide behind the nets...don't let the animals see you. Today we had a busy day with the starting of the soccer world cup...so there came a lot of people to check in for the weekend and the week!!We had to welcome the guests from 13:00-21:00!So I did welcoming for a bit and went to the pancake just to help out and Mel asked me to stay there,because Nico has to go help in the kitchen.So I made pancakes and help clean after all the guests came in.

Today I worked at the Wildlife Centre. The morning we had to feed the animals at 08:00, but before feeding the animals you have to prepare their food so I helped to prepare their food and helped Charmaine, Brian and Faaitjie to feed the animals.After feeding the animals you have to clean their bottles, buckets and the rest of the lids that some of the animals use to get their food. Cleaning is a very important thing when it come's to animals because it must be hygienic otherwise the animals willl get sick like for example get diaree. After doing the feeding process we had to slauther 2 warthogs for the cat's like the lion's, caracals, servals, and some of the carnivore birds like the owls and the groudhornbill Peter. I cleaned the outside clinic had to get all of the lucern out and cleaned the floor where all of their dung is.

Today I worked at the Wildlife Centre again..so basically we had to prepare their food and feed the animals. I fed the caracals, serval kittens, the giraffe matilda...when feeding the animals you have to be aware of their behaviour and when you are entering their comfort zone. I had to clean the Mongoose boma and swept the floor and get all of the dirt out. We then went to the giraffe boma and had to get all of the lucern out and into bags to put on theMahindra and to take to the back of the Wildlife Centre.We fed the animals at 15:00 and had to clean the tables where we cut the meat.

OUR FIREBREAK COURSE

MONDAY 31 MAY

Today we started with our new course...named firebreak!We packed all of our equipment on the tractor and went to the Makhato houses. We just had a look at where we are going to cut, and went back for lunch...we had to do welcoming today and there came 25 people in for the week. So we had welcoming till about 16:30.

This course was the best, I learned how to work with brush cutters, slashers, Pangaea's, saw's and even to be safe with the thorns...we all worked together and didn't have problems with people that doesn't want to work we came very far and all that I've really learned about this course is how to make the firebreaks and where we must have been brush cutting and what to do with old trees...This is a very important thing to do, because all of us learned how to make the firebreaks and where it would be the most important to make the firebreaks!At the last day of our course we was thanked by Diederick our Principal, Mel our Manager, and Ian our farm Manager we had to get food and something to drink after our hard working two weeks and it was worth it...I had a great time doing fire breaks...

30 April (Friday)

Today we had welcoming from 13:00-21:00; welcoming the guests is improving my skills to talk to people.Because before I came to Sondela I couldn't talk to a lot of people I don't know. There came quite a lot of guests that checked in for the weekend.

1 May (Saturday)

Today I was on gamedrives, I had a 09:00 tractor gamderive. The tractor was full of guests and I had my first gamedrive on my one, at first I stressed a lot because of all the people was almost like stage fright , but later on I got used to the guests and talked a lot to them, they've asked me a lot of questions and most of the questions got answers back. The guests thanked me for the gamedrive I've given them and they said they enjoyed it a lot! At 16:00 I had a gamedrive with Claas, I was the tourguide and he was the driver...I enjoyed it a lot,had quite a lot to speak about, but also learned new things I didn't know before. LAter at 18:00 I had a night gamedrive with Jason, he was the driver and I was the tourguide...but we both said the facts we know about the animals. We saw quite a lot of animals

Topic: Theoretical Training

Identify Component: We had this 3 weeks theory about mammals, birds, geology, ecology, weather & climate, grass, Amphibians, arachnida etc.

Strong points: I’ve learned much more about the different types of grass, trees, mammals etc. I enjoyed it allot...The assessments helped alot.

Challenges: The assessments was to close together, I couldn’t get all of the workbooks in my head.

What did you learn: About the completing of the workbooks, if you complete the workbooks you learn much more.

How can we make this better: Not to do assessments on the same day or after the day we handled it.

Topic: Roster

Identify Component: A roster of our weekly happenings, what we are going to handle in class and in the bush.

Strong Points: It’s nice to have a roster to see what we are going to do in the week.

Strong points: I love feeding the animals and to play with the serval kittens.

Challenges: Feeding the rhino’s is tuff ,because you have to run with the buckets to the open area where they stay in the day.

Strong Points: Telling the guests of the variety things I know about.

FIRE FIGHTING COURSE

2 March 2010

Today we did practical and theorical. Our sourse leader was Heino, he explained what to do in a fire and what is the neccessary clothing that you have to wear. At our practical we worked with the hosepipe and learned what to do when there is a fire.. he showed us all of the equipment. I've learned allot about fire fighting. Everything is about teamwork, time (This is a very important thing that you must keep in mind), because if you take youre time the fire is going to spread and allot of animals are going to burn dead. This was a very interesting day for me and i've learned everytihng I didn't know about firefighting!

Today we started with our first aid course our presentator was Gerrit... He is in first aid for 15 years now and is doing training for 7 years.

*Make patients needs a priority.
*Maintain skills, knowledge.
*Get information about injuries.
*Critically review performance (seek ways to improve)
*Prepare honest reports.

We learned that HELP doesn't mean you have to help the person physically.
This was a very interresting course I did, because i've never done CPR to a person before...I enjoyed it very much and would like to go futher in the course...

We did some pratical but most of the time it was theory.

24 February

Today it was our second day of our course...we finished the book and learned much more about snake bites etc. We wrote a test and did a practical test on CPR. It was a exciting day for everyone and later the evening we started doing pratical examinations like car accidents etc.

Everyone passed the course and had a great day.

CONSERVATION

We had welcoming at the caravan park, it was very nice to meet so many people. We worked till 21:00 in the evening. But I had a little accident at the lapa in the caravan park...I've cut mysself with grass, and needed to go to the hospital to get stitches. Was very funny just to think that i've cut mysself with grass.

Saturday, 13 February

Early in the morning we greeted the guests and played the rest for the day with the kids, we builded blocks, played musical chairs, ball game's, ect. It was very fun...I went on a game drive at 15:30, we saw quite allot, and learned very mucvh about the animals. We also had a bring and braai later the evening, we braai for the people or they can choose if they can, it's their choice.

Sunday, 14 February

Today is valentines day, a day for couples to come to Sondela. Most of the people went home. We had allot of activities like, bingo, crcket, waterballoons ect. Later after the meeting we went to the stables were we had the oppurtunity to ride horse. I've riden Diablo...it was funny because he didn't want me to lead him, al he wanted to do was go back to the stables.

Drawing of a cat:

We had to draw a cat on a plain piece of paper. What the cat's name is, what does he/she eat, what colour the cat is, male or female, colour of eyes, habits ect.

We showed the classmates our cats and told them about our cats. It was quite interressting and funny. There were round cats, perfect cats that looked like paintings. But it didn't matter about how the cat looked like it was all about communication.

Communication was good and we laughed allot.

My cat (Whiskers) is brown with blue eyes, he love's tuna and is a fat, healthy cat.

Today we all learnt how to build a tower of only the equipment that was given to us. It wasn't about how the tower looked , but of it's weight. We had to put 500g on it, if it breaks your'e out. Our tower was very strong. We had allot of fun, and I really learned allot,Iv'e never build a tower of only paper.

Game with string

Everybody is blindfolded and stringed with strings & paperclips the group leader (Dewaldt) had to lead us to the cup without touching us. All he had to do is direct us to the cup. You have 3 drop chances, third one is out. The key had to fall in the cup. Everybody laughed, it was funny and also very fun. Some people got mad because nobody watched them how they played the game.

The egg was like our baby, we had to keep it safe like it was our own. the whole group went to the caravan park where Kerneels our group leader had to throw the egg of the lookout view. All the groups egg's wasn't broken it was a successful game and allot of fun.

Haka

This game was quite interresting, we had a great time... It was all about communication! We had to do "Roei die bootjie" and drop and roll, it was very funny and everybody laughed at us. It was a game of alot of fun. All the groups had a chance.

Warmbad (Bela Bela) Tour

Today was a day to get to learn the town...we all had a meeting were we talked about rules of the bus and what tipe of questions you can ask a customer when on a tour. We arrived in town at about 09:20 were we stopped at Information Centre. At the Information Centre you get basic information about Bela Bela, where to eat, shop, ect. The waterfront was named after a piece of water that couvered the whole area. It was a big soggy place.

Our next stop was at the Sondela office's near the graveyard we just stopped there and had a look at it, so that we can know where to find it.

After it we arrived at 09:50 where we had a little visit at the Graveyard. It was named Headbutt and Paul Kruger wanted to buy it. Christina Pretorius the wife of Andries Pretorius (one of the voortrekker leaders) thought she would get better if she drink water, but it only made matters worse. She was born in 1800 and died at the age of 48 in 1848. Her surname was before she married Andries Roode. They had a grand opening on the 10 th of December 1938.

At 10:07 we arrived at the African Market, this is a place where they contribute their prices and make it allot cheaper. The Taxi rank across the African Market has about +-40-70 000 taxi's. Here you have to know what to do and what not to do.

After a few minutes we went to a historical place...Blockhouse at about 10:30 we learned about the Blockhouse history. It was build by Englis to protect the railway from attacks. Was carrying supplies. Blockhouse was erected by the British forces during the Anglo-Boer war (1899-1902)to protect the railway. It formed part if the line of blockhouses from houpoort to Pietersburg. There are 7 manning the blockhouse. Made own crops.

Today was one of the most interressting day's that i've had so far at Sondela. At class we had a debrieve about what is going to happen tonight...we went out with the bakkie at about 18:00 and waited for the plane to come spray the birds. While we were waiting we talked about what their natural habits are, how many eggs they can lay, how many months's they are fully grown ect.

There is allot of rules conserving the story: *Everybody must chase away anything that doesn't look like a bird.*Must avacuate the area so other animals can't die of the poison.*Their are flairs (can's with diesel) put all over were the birds are breeding. *The poison are 4-10 litres per hektar and their needs to be 48 hektars sprayed.

The Red Billed Queleas is a pess to farmers, because they are eating al their gran up...They decided to poisen the birds so that they can't do it anymore!

We had to watch out for dangerous species like bull frogs, cattle eagrit ect. They can eat the birds and die of the poison so allot of other animals are going to die.

We give the endangered species that got some of the poison Antropeen it helps to fight the poison...it gets allot better but might take a few days to get the poison out.

We looked at Medcare, security, a fire vehichle in case their starts a fire in the bush of the cans of diesel.

Next Morning

We woke up at 03:00 in the morning, riding to the academy almost got attacked by Blue Wildebeest it was quite funny. We came at the boy's house dranked a cup of coffee and was on our way into the bush with the Tata. We came their and Cobus told us to devide into seperate groups to everybody can scare away the endangered animals. I was with Kelvin and Eddy, the whole way we were on search for snakes, but got nothing so we found our way back to the Tata. Lydon, PG and Antonette founded a puffadder lying in the bush.

Today we were knowing Sondela as any guest would. Firstly we went to Reception to get the people know each other and learnt how to be friendly to guests. We met the managers at the management office and saw the beauty salon next to it. We saw the guesthouse it has a swimming pool and is a walking distance from the tuckshop, reception and Piccinini's Bistro & Ladies bar. At 09:00 we went to the Wildlife Centre were we learned about the animals natural habits, what their names are and were each animal stays in the Wildlife Centre. After the visit at the Wildlife Centre we went to the caravan park which is almost next to the Wildlife Centre...what a interesting place to be camping for a long weekend! There is still allot to do at the caravan park and fun for the kiddies to do! You can see Daisy walking between the horses and what really fun is, is to tuch her...
Today was a really experienced day I had and learned quite allot!
